In 2015, I attended the Academic and Information Literacy (AIL) curriculum integration training programme offered by the University of Auckland Library and Learning Services. This is an in-house professional development programme, aimed to help subject librarians, learning advisors and learning support librarians to gain a better understanding of academic and information literacy, and how to integrate it into course curricula. In the programme, I was required to complete assignments that asked me to map the accounting and finance curricula, identify a specific course suitable for AIL integration and analyse the required assignment in terms of AIL complexity.   

This year, I followed up the work I had done on the AIL integration training programme with a Learning Support Librarian and the course coordinator. Through collaboration we identified what the students’ information needs were and how we could support them in relation to their assessment tasks.

The result was not true integration but it enabled me to begin the conversation about integration with the lecturer. We provided hybrid support – face to face drop in sessions and online support through the learning management system. This presentation will discuss the value of AIL integration training as professional development and how it allowed us to begin the conversation about AIL integration into a year 3 Accounting paper. It will also discuss where to next.
