Western Australia, which did not have a library at all.

What was it like to live in a town without a library?
This question has two parts. One: what was it li[...]ces of reading material.

I knew there wasn’t a library in Wingellina / Irrunytju,
the town we were going[...]g your speech.

I had never before been without a library. As a
second—generation immigrant who had learn[...]to give me the
advantage of English fluency. The library became

our happy place. Maybe my self this week[...]lives I was entering did not
much resemble my own life. More searching followed,

universe—as—library idea holds a certain attraction.
Maybe part of wh[...]exists all the
unfettered chaos of the world. The
library is a labyrinth, and labyrinths
dictate both neces[...]content, are a language I was taught

to read. A library can be a doon/vay, of

many people this is not a reality. Rather, the library
may embody frustration, even despair, the books,[...]rants, right? But there are limitations to

An alternative model: library as platform

I recently read a book on the future[...]sted
me was a brief discussion on the idea of the library as
platform in the digital world.

Palfrey points[...]begins with the need ‘to start
by replacing the library as place with the library
as platform, each library being a node in a series
of interconnected platforms’ as ‘the core function
of the library and those who work in them will be
dramatically m[...]y and citizenship. The ‘crucial
elements of the library as platform are the access to
information that li[...]s from across New Zealand (including
the National Library) the key challenges for the future
of libraries w[...]level and
aspiration of collaboration across the library sector.
It was noted that this would require a sh[...]itment to an often wistfully envisaged ‘one big
library’.

Those of you who attended the recent LIANZA[...]ana in her
Presidential address talk about ‘one library for all of
New Zealand’ through shared infrast[...]entation
also talked about the idea of ‘one big library’ and
how the National Library, in its future positioning
