Ernest Bell devoted 38 years to the Canterbury Public Library until his retirement in 1951.
During his time at the library he greatly increased the number of members and was an early advocate for using radio programs to broadcast twice weekly to children using stories, plays, poems and songs.
He also set up "travelling libraries" around 1920 which would see the smaller communities receiving and exchanging boxes of books every few months.
