Adrienne Hannan - Iron-librarian (hopefully).
Eat well, do your laundry, get a massage, be 5mins early, plan ahead, get the right gear for the job, laugh at yourself, and go to the bathroom before you leave.
If you want to see something different happen, you have to do something differently. In 2015 Adrienne Hannan decided to do something different. She was at Ironman in Taupo watching the mixture of emotions experienced by those crossing the finish line. Her friend beside her observed that these people were Certifiably Crazy, Adrienne responded that they were In Fact Inspirational. An idea was born. For many years Adrienne has been an Ultramarathon Runner, much to the protest of her knees and feet. Facing the prospect of another looming training season that was sure to be remarkably similar to previous seasons with the same results (i.e. disappointing), she decided that something needed to change.
Not long after she clicked on a big scary ‘Enter’ button and was registered for Ironman 2016, and had 9months to turn herself from an Ultramarathoner into a Triathlete and complete the biggest and toughest triathlon in the world.
To achieve this goal, Adrienne had to do things differently. Things had to change, and change can be a great thing.
Adrienne is the Children and Youth Services Coordinator for Wellington City Libraries. Her job is demanding in the best way and sometimes sees her working long and unsociable hours. To balance Ironman training and work, the two had to become compatible and mesh. To fit in a 40-50hr working week with a 20hr training programme was going to require a level of efficiency and dedication not previously required in either work or personal life.
In this humorous and relaxed webinar Adrienne will talk about the lessons learnt through training for Ironman, and how this has influenced how she manages her daily workload and has made her better at her job. Some of the ideas covered will be:
· Making a flexible plan and sticking to it.
· Getting the right gear to do the job, no one appreciates a naked cyclist
· Be prepared, think ahead, do your laundry
· Be kind to yourself (aka: it’s okay to eat cake)
· Communicate honestly (your coach will always find out if you’re lying)
· Have a support crew that can stand the smell of your armpits
· Efficiency of effort, prioritise your time
· Getting back on the bike when you come off
· Sharks can swim a lot faster than humans
